We're Different: Genesis Chapter 2

Genesis 2:4-9 (NKJV) 2:4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Humanity is different.  People are different from every other creation on earth.  Look at the creation process.  God created the heavens, the earth, light, fish, birds, animals all of those things with just a spoken word.  “Let there be…”   Everything was created by the word of God.
But look at this portion of scripture.  In verse seven it tells us that God formed man out of the dust of the ground.  God used His hands.  God touched us.  He created us out of the ground with thought and care.  How different that is from the way He created animals.

Genesis 1:24 (NKJV) 1:24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind"; and it was so.
So He carefully molded us, and created us with His hands.  In the psalms David talks about man’s creation in this way:
We are fearfully and wonderfully made.  He’s speaking of God’s care and delight in His creation.  God takes that same care to create each of us.  We are created in His image:  By His hands, with the same delight in our creation.
Psalms 139:13-16 (NKJV) 139:13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

A newborn is looked at with the same delight by his parents.  They examine his hands and feet with wonder.  They look at his eyes and face.  They try to see whom the child most resembles.  In whose image is he? David is saying that this is how God sees us as He creates us.  After all, we are also made in His image.

Finally, there is one other thing in this.  It’s found in verse seven as well.

Genesis 2:7 (NKJV)
2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Scientists tell us that mankind is different only by the virtue of our intelligence.  We are able to speak and reason only because of that intelligence.  But, I think the thing that sets us apart from animals is the Spirit of God that is breathed into us.  We are in God’s image.  Like God, we love, we appreciate beauty, and we need purpose for our lives; no other being on the face of this earth is like that.  The reason for that is that no other being on the face of the earth is made in the image of God.

Humanity is set aside, consecrated for God’s use by virtue of the fact that we are created to be like Him, and fashioned by His hands.  How can you help but worship a God who created you with a part of Himself built in.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made!

The Strong’s Concordance tells us that the Hebrew word used for breath is the same word that is used for spirit.  So God breathed not only life into us but His spirit, as well.  The Spirit of God resides in humanity.  It doesn’t reside in animals.  No other part of His creation has received the breath of God or the spirit of God.  No other part of creation was made in the image of God.  We’re special.

Stream of Thought:

  1. God created all of creation with a word except mankind.
  2. He formed us with His hands.
  3. He carefully crafted us into His image
  4. He created each of us personally.  “Your eyes saw MY substance.”
  5. He breathed His spirit into us.
  6. We are different because He put a part of Himself into us.
  7. It’s not intelligence that makes us different, it’s God’s Spirit.
