How Powerful is the Word of God? Genesis Chapter 1

Genesis 1:1-5 (NKJV) 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
Here are the very first moments of creation laid out for us.  God created the heavens and the earth.  He created all that we see and know through His word.  God spoke it all into existence.  If we could somehow travel to the very edge of the universe, we would hear the words, “Let there be light.”

“Let there be,” God spoke those words seven times in the first chapter of Genesis.  It’s interesting that seven is the Biblical number of completion.  But more interesting than that, is the power of the Words of God.  God’s word creates.  God’s word brings life.  God’s word brings order from Chaos.

The wonderful thing is that he has given us His words.  He spoke His words into the hearts of faithful men: His words, His thoughts and they, faithfully, put down those words in written form, giving us the Bible.  We can have the power of those words in our lives in the twenty-first century:  The words that created the universe.  If words are powerful enough to create the universe, do you think they can have the power to change your personal universe?  Can they have power in your life?

There was one other thing that occurred to me as I read this:

John 1:1-5 (NKJV) 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
In this scripture, in verse three, it says, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  Jesus is the Word of God.  He is the power that created the universe.  He is the power that changes lives. He is the power that can change your life.
His life demonstrated obedience to the will of God.  His death destroyed the bondage of sin in our lives.  His resurrection confirmed the power of God over death.  And get this, this is the wonderful thing the Bible tells us that the power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us.

Romans 8:11 (NKJV) 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
If we have received Christ then we have the power of the word of God in us:  The power that creates; that brings life; that changes chaos into order.  That power is in us.  So we are not bound to our circumstances but have the power to rise above it, through the word of God.
I started this with the question, “How powerful is the word of God?” The answer to that question is simply this.  It is powerful enough to change your life.

Stream of thought:

  1. God’s spoken word created the universe.
  2. That word has power.
  3. He has given us His word through the Bible.
  4. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Word of God.
  5. The power that raised him from the dead dwells in us.
  6. We have the power that created the universe in us
  7. That’s enough power to change our lives.

  1. Hi Chris,
Great new blog, I like what you are setting out to do here. God and words, it is astonishing what God achieves by His word alone - good incentive to be reading His Words!
    Blessings, Mike

  2. "God’s word brings order from Chaos" This quote alone can carry us though anything life throws at us. Looking forward to this blog.
