The Names of Truth: Genesis Chapter 5

I know the Word of God is true.  This is a statement that most Christians make at some point.  But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the Bible, the inspired word of God must be true.  I have evidence.  It can’t be any other way.  I’ll show you why.

Genesis 5:1-31 (NKJV) 5:1 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died. 6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. 9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died. 12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died. 15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died. 18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died. 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. 25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died. 28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, "This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed." 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.
This passage is one of the parts of the Bible that we have a tendency to skip over.  It seems like just a list of names:  Who begat who.  This is just a list of generations.  But actually, for me, it's a proof that God exists and that the Bible is true.
Look the following list:  Adam, Seth, Enosh, Cainan, Mahaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah.  Ten names:  The first ten men in the genealogy of Jesus. But their names are important.  Their names have meanings. The following is the same list of names with their meanings in English:

Adam – Mankind
Seth – Appointed
Enosh – Mortal
Cainan – Sorrow
Mahaleel – The Blessed God
Jared – Shall Come down
Enoch – Teaching
Methuselah – His death shall bring
Lamech – The despairing
Noah – Rest (peace)

As a sentence - Mankind appointed mortal sorrow:  The Blessed God shall come down teaching, His death shall bring the despairing, rest (peace).

Look at the truth of this sentence.  Mankind through Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden.  Because of that sin death and sorrow came into the world.

This is where mortality and sorrow is appointed to mankind:

Genesis 3:16-19 (NKJV) 3:16 To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." 17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return."
Jesus as we know is the Christ, the anointed one of God.  In the New Testament Jesus asserts himself as God.
Notice that in this verse it is the same.  I AM WHO I AM.  He is also using that word Yahweh.  This is what made Yahweh (I AM) the word that the Jews couldn’t utter.  This is why the Jews became so angry that they wanted to stone Jesus.  To them, He was speaking blasphemy because he was saying He was God.
John 8:54-59 (NKJV) 8:54 Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55 Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, 'I do not know Him,' I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." 57 Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." 59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
In this passage Jesus does two things.  First, he speaks of his own timelessness.  He speaks of Abraham as seeing his day.  Before “Abraham was,” He was there before Abraham.  Second, he makes the statement, I AM.  In the Bible this is capitalized.  It’s not, “Before Abraham was, I am,”  it’s “I AM”  why the distinction?  Because the word that Jesus used in the Hebrew was Yahweh:  The word that is the name of God from Exodus Chapter 3.

Exodus 3:14 (NKJV) 3:14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

We also know that Jesus spent much of his time teaching.  Matthew 5:2, 7:29, 13:54, and 28:15 as well as numerous other scriptures speak of Jesus teaching the people. Finally there is this, we receive peace with God through his death.
Romans 5:8-11 (NKJV) 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Christ died for us.  His death and spilled blood purchases us reconciliation with God.  What is reconciliation, but it is the restoration of peace within a relationship.  If two spouses fight and separate there is no peace until they reconcile.
I went through all of that to demonstrate the truth of the sentence that is made through the meanings of all the names between Adam and Noah that were in the lineage of Jesus.  But what makes me know the Bible is true is this.  I’ll phrase it as a question:  What are the odds that each of those men would be named in the exact order to make this prophecy of Jesus?

What would it entail?

  1. They would have to know the future.  They would have to know that this would happen that this was how God’s plan would play out.
  2. They all had other children, so they had to know which of those children would wind up in Noah’s (and ultimately) Jesus’ lineage.
  3. They would have to remember all of this n order to name the appropriate children the name that corresponds with the following step in the prophecy.
  4. Or it would have to be inspired by a God who did know what would happen.

It is virtually impossible for this to be coincident or planned out by the people involved.  It has to have come from God.  So the Bible has to be true.

Stream of Thought:

  1. The Bible contains genealogies for a reason
  2. This genealogy is the first step in the genealogy of Christ.
  3. The names have meanings that correspond to a prophecy of Christ.
  4. The New Testament supports the truth of the prophecy.
  5. Mankind was appointed mortality and sorrow through sin.
  6. Jesus taught us and then made peace for us with God through his death.
  7. The names in the genealogy could not be planned or coincident,
  8. They were inspired by God…The Bible must be true.
